Prep Time: 25 minutes
Chill Time: 2–4 hours
Total Time: About 3–4 hours
Servings: 8–10
Difficulty: Easy
Method: No-bake

Ingredients
For the Lemon Cream
8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
½ cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon finely grated lemon zest
1 cup heavy whipping cream, cold
For the Blueberry Layer
3 cups fresh blueberries
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon water
For the Cake Layer
1 prepared 9-inch vanilla or lemon cake
Cut into approximately 1-inch cubes

Or: use about 5–6 cups cubed pound cake, angel food cake, or sponge cake.

Optional Garnish
½ cup fresh blueberries
Lemon slices or lemon zest
Whipped cream
Fresh mint
White chocolate curls
Chopped almonds or pecans, if desired
Instructions
1. Prepare the Blueberry Filling

Add 2 cups blueberries, sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, cornstarch, and water to a small saucepan.

Cook over medium heat for about 4–6 minutes, stirring gently.

The blueberries should begin releasing their juices and the mixture should become slightly thickened.

Remove from the heat.

Stir in the remaining 1 cup fresh blueberries.

Let the blueberry mixture cool completely before assembling the trifle.

Important: Don’t layer the dessert while the blueberry mixture is hot, because it can soften the cake and melt the cream layer.

2. Make the Lemon Cream

Place softened cream cheese in a large mixing bowl.

Beat until smooth and creamy.

Add:

Powdered sugar
Vanilla
Lemon juice
Lemon zest

Beat again until well combined.

In a separate bowl, whip the cold heavy cream until medium-stiff peaks form.

Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture.

You should have a thick, fluffy lemon cream.

3. Prepare the Cake

Cut the vanilla, lemon, pound cake, or angel food cake into approximately 1-inch cubes.

If your cake is very fresh and soft, allow the cubes to sit uncovered for about 15–20 minutes so they become slightly easier to layer.

4. Assemble the Trifle

Use a large glass trifle bowl or individual dessert glasses.

Create the following layers:

Layer 1

Add about â…“ of the cake cubes.

Layer 2

Spread about â…“ of the lemon cream over the cake.

Layer 3

Add about â…“ of the cooled blueberry mixture.

Repeat the layers:

Cake → Lemon Cream → Blueberries

Continue until the bowl is full.

Finish with a layer of lemon cream and fresh blueberries.

5. Garnish

Decorate the top with:

Fresh blueberries
Lemon zest
Lemon slices
Whipped cream
Fresh mint

For an extra-special presentation, add a few white chocolate curls.

6. Chill

Cover the trifle and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

For the best texture, let it chill for 3–4 hours.

This gives the cake time to absorb some of the lemon and blueberry flavors while becoming soft and moist.

Recipe Tips
Use fresh blueberries

Fresh blueberries give the best texture and appearance, although frozen blueberries can also work for the cooked filling.

Don’t skip the lemon zest

Fresh zest provides a stronger lemon flavor than lemon juice alone.

Cool the blueberry mixture completely

This is one of the most important steps. Warm blueberry filling can cause the cream layer to become runny.

Don’t overwhip the cream

Whip until medium-stiff peaks form. Overwhipping can make the cream grainy.

Make it extra lemony

Add another teaspoon of lemon zest to the cream.

Make it sweeter

Add an extra tablespoon of powdered sugar to the lemon cream.

Make it less sweet

Use a less-sweet cake and reduce the sugar in the blueberry filling.

Individual servings

Build the trifle in small glasses or jars for an attractive party dessert.

Variations
Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Trifle

Add a layer of crushed graham crackers between the cake and lemon cream.

White Chocolate Lemon Blueberry Trifle

Add thin white chocolate curls between the layers.

Strawberry Blueberry Lemon Trifle

Add sliced strawberries along with the blueberries.

Raspberry Lemon Trifle

Replace part of the blueberries with fresh raspberries.

Gluten-Free Lemon Blueberry Trifle

Use certified gluten-free cake.

Lower-Sugar Version

Use:

Reduced-sugar cake
Sugar-free powdered sweetener
Unsweetened whipped cream

Keep in mind that the exact nutrition will depend on the products used.

Q&A
Can I make Lemon Blueberry Trifle the day before?

Yes. In fact, making it several hours ahead allows the flavors to blend and the cake to become tender.

How long does it last in the refrigerator?

Store covered in the refrigerator for approximately 2–3 days. The cake will become progressively softer as it sits.

Can I use frozen blueberries?

Yes. Frozen blueberries work well for the cooked blueberry layer. There is no need to fully thaw them first, but they may release more liquid.

Can I use blueberry pie filling?

Yes. For a faster version, you can substitute prepared blueberry pie filling for the homemade blueberry layer.

Can I use lemon pudding instead of lemon cream?

Yes. Lemon pudding can be used for a simpler version, although the texture and flavor will be different.

What cake works best?

Vanilla cake, lemon cake, pound cake, and angel food cake all work well.

Can I use store-bought cake?

Absolutely. A bakery pound cake or prepared angel food cake makes this recipe much faster.

Why did my trifle become watery?

The most common reasons are warm blueberry filling, watery berries, or overbeaten/loose cream. Make sure the blueberry mixture is completely cool before assembling.

Can I freeze this trifle?

Freezing is not recommended because the whipped cream and fresh berries can change texture after thawing.

Can I make individual trifles?

Yes! Small dessert cups or jars are perfect for parties and make serving much easier.

Can I make this without cream cheese?

Yes. You can make a simple whipped lemon cream using heavy cream, powdered sugar, vanilla, lemon juice, and lemon zest.

Can I use Greek yogurt?

Yes. Replace some of the cream cheese with thick Greek yogurt for a lighter, tangier variation.

Is this dessert nut-free?

The basic recipe is nut-free, but always check packaged cake and other ingredients for possible cross-contact if serving someone with a severe allergy.

Is it gluten-free?

Not with regular cake. Use certified gluten-free cake to make the dessert gluten-free.

Can I add cheesecake pieces?

Yes. Small cubes of cheesecake make an indulgent addition and turn this into an even richer cheesecake-style trifle.

How do I keep the layers looking beautiful?

Use a clear glass bowl and carefully spoon each layer toward the outside edge first. Wipe the inside of the bowl clean before adding the next layer if necessary.
