Full Step-by-Step Recipe
1. Drain the tuna extremely well

Open the cans and drain them.

Press the tuna gently with a fork or spoon to remove excess water.

This is very important for this particular dip. Excess liquid will make it loose rather than thick and scoopable.

Put the tuna into a large mixing bowl.

2. Break up the tuna

Use a fork to flake the tuna into small pieces.

For the texture in the photograph, don’t pulverize it into a paste.

You want small flakes with some texture remaining.

3. Prepare the vegetables

Finely dice:

red pepper
red onion
optional jalapeño
optional celery

Slice the green onions.

Chop the cilantro.

The pieces should be relatively small so that the dip stays together when scooped onto a cracker.

4. Prepare the black beans

Drain and rinse the black beans.

Pat them dry with paper towels.

If the beans are very large, roughly chop about half of them.

Leave the other half whole.

This creates the chunky appearance visible in the photograph.

5. Make the creamy dressing

In another bowl combine:

mayonnaise
Greek yogurt
lime juice
Dijon
chili powder
cumin
smoked paprika
garlic powder
onion powder
black pepper
salt
hot sauce

Whisk until completely smooth.

Taste it.

You want the dressing to taste slightly stronger and more seasoned than you ultimately want the dip, because the tuna and vegetables will dilute the flavor.

6. Combine the tuna and vegetables

Add to the tuna:

black beans
red pepper
red onion
green onion
cilantro
corn
jalapeño, if using

Gently mix.

Don’t mash the black beans.

7. Add the dressing

Pour approximately ¾ of the dressing over the tuna mixture.

Fold gently.

Add more dressing as necessary.

You may not need every drop.

The finished mixture should be:

creamy + thick + scoopable

—not runny.

8. Taste and adjust

This is the important finishing stage.

Add more:

For brightness: lime juice

For heat: jalapeño or hot sauce

For smoky flavor: smoked paprika

For Mexican/Southwestern flavor: cumin

For creaminess: Greek yogurt or mayo

For saltiness: salt

For sweetness: a tiny pinch of sugar or ½ tsp honey if your peppers are particularly tart.

9. Chill

Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 30–60 minutes.

This allows the flavors to blend and gives the dip a thicker texture.

For an even firmer dip, refrigerate 2 hours.

10. Make the topping

Spread the dip into a serving bowl.

Smooth the top with a spoon.

Add a small amount of Greek yogurt or sour cream in the center.

Then sprinkle with:

paprika
cilantro
green onion
diced red pepper

That’s what gives you the colorful presentation shown in the photograph.

How to Get the Exact Thick Texture

The photograph shows a very thick tuna spread, not a thin tuna salad.

Use these tricks:

Drain everything

Tuna, beans and corn should all be well drained.

Dice vegetables very small

Large watery tomato pieces can loosen the mixture.

Don’t add all the dressing at once

Start with ¾ cup and increase gradually.

Chill before serving

The dip firms as it sits.

Use Greek yogurt rather than regular yogurt

Greek yogurt has substantially less free liquid.

For an even thicker version

Use:

1 cup mayonnaise
½ cup Greek yogurt

instead of ¾ cup mayo + ½ cup yogurt.

High-Protein Version

If you’re specifically looking for a high-protein version, change the dressing to:

1 cup nonfat Greek yogurt
¼ cup mayonnaise
1 tbsp Dijon
2 tbsp lime juice
seasonings as above

This substantially increases the protein while reducing the mayonnaise.

You can also add ½ cup cottage cheese, blended until smooth, to the dressing.

That makes a surprisingly creamy high-protein dip without adding a lot of extra volume.

Approximate Nutrition

Nutrition depends heavily on the tuna, mayonnaise, yogurt and crackers you use.

For the recipe above, without crackers, a rough estimate is:

Per serving — 1/8 recipe Approx.
Calories 250–300
Protein 25–30 g
Carbohydrates 8–12 g
Fat 12–17 g
Fiber 2–3 g
Sugar 2–4 g

The crackers are not included because brands vary enormously.

A leaner Greek-yogurt-heavy version can reduce calories and increase the protein percentage considerably. Similar tuna-dip recipes use Greek yogurt as the creamy base specifically for a high-protein snack.

Nut & Allergen Information
Tree nuts

None in the basic recipe.

Peanuts

None in the basic recipe.

Dairy

Yes, if using Greek yogurt.

For dairy-free, replace Greek yogurt with a suitable dairy-free yogurt.

Eggs

Possibly.

Regular mayonnaise commonly contains eggs.

Use egg-free mayonnaise if necessary.

Fish

Yes.

This recipe contains tuna.

Gluten

The dip itself can be gluten-free, but many crackers are not.

For gluten-free serving, use certified gluten-free crackers or vegetables.

Soy

Potentially present depending on your mayonnaise, crackers, or other packaged ingredients.

Always check the individual labels if you have an allergy.

FAQ
Can I use chicken instead of tuna?

Absolutely.

Replace the tuna with approximately 4 cups cooked shredded chicken.

The result becomes a Southwestern chicken dip.

Can I use canned salmon?

Yes.

Salmon works particularly well with the lime, cumin and smoked paprika.

Can I leave out the black beans?

Yes.

If you want the dip to look more like traditional tuna salad, simply omit them.

Can I add avocado?

Yes, but add it shortly before serving.

Use 1 diced avocado or mash half into the dressing.

Avocado makes it richer and creamier but can discolor during storage.

A published Mexican tuna salad variation also combines tuna with black beans, peppers, lime and avocado.

Can I add corn?

Definitely.

I’d use ⅓–½ cup.

It adds sweetness and a nice contrast to the smoky spices.

Is the jalapeño necessary?

No.

The photograph doesn’t necessarily indicate significant heat.

For mild dip, omit it.

For medium heat, use one small jalapeño.

For spicy, add jalapeño plus hot sauce.

Can I make it without mayonnaise?

Yes.

Use:

1¼ cups Greek yogurt

instead of the mayo/yogurt combination.

You’ll get a lighter, tangier dip.

Can I use ranch seasoning?

Yes.

For an especially creamy ranch-Southwestern flavor, add 1–1½ tbsp ranch seasoning and reduce the salt.

Southwestern tuna recipes commonly pair tuna and vegetables with ranch seasoning, cumin and a creamy dressing.

Can I make it ahead?

Yes.

It’s actually better after it sits for a little while.

Keep it covered and refrigerated.

USDA guidance says cooked seafood and similar refrigerated leftovers should generally be used within 3–4 days, and perishable foods should not remain at room temperature for more than about 2 hours (or 1 hour when temperatures exceed 90°F/32°C).

Can I freeze it?

I wouldn’t recommend it.

The mayonnaise/Greek yogurt and fresh vegetables can separate and become watery after thawing.

What crackers are best?

For the photo-style presentation, choose a sturdy square cracker that won’t break under the thick dip.

You can also use:

tortilla chips
pita chips
seed crackers
cucumber
celery
bell pepper
toasted baguette
