Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Bread
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Slice the Italian loaf lengthwise.
Carefully hollow out some of the soft bread from the center, leaving about a 1-inch border to create a sturdy shell.
Step 2: Cook the Filling
Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the onions and bell peppers. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened.
Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
Add the sliced beef and cook for 4–6 minutes until browned.
Season with:
Worcestershire sauce
Italian seasoning
Smoked paprika
Garlic powder
Onion powder
Salt
Pepper
Cook until most of the liquid has evaporated.
Remove from heat.
Step 3: Make the Garlic Butter
In a small bowl combine:
Melted butter
Garlic
Parsley
Italian seasoning
Brush the inside of the bread generously with the garlic butter.
Step 4: Assemble
Spread half of the mozzarella and provolone cheese inside the bread.
Top with the beef and pepper mixture.
Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella, provolone, and Parmesan over the filling.
Brush the outside of the loaf with any remaining garlic butter.
Step 5: Bake
Place the stuffed loaf on a baking sheet.
Bake uncovered for 15–18 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
For a golden top, broil for 2–3 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
Step 6: Serve
Let the loaf rest for 5 minutes.
Sprinkle with chopped parsley.
Slice into thick portions and serve warm.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use ground beef instead of shaved steak?
Yes. Lean ground beef is a budget-friendly substitute. Brown it well and drain any excess fat before mixing with the vegetables.
What’s the best cheese for a cheesesteak?
Provolone, mozzarella, white American cheese, or Cheez Whiz are all classic choices. A combination of mozzarella and provolone gives a rich, gooey texture.
Can I prepare it ahead of time?
Yes. Assemble the loaf, cover tightly, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Bake just before serving.
How do I keep the bread from getting soggy?
Lightly toast the hollowed loaf before adding the filling, and avoid leaving excess liquid in the cooked beef mixture.
Can I add mushrooms?
Absolutely. Sauté sliced mushrooms with the onions and peppers for extra flavor and texture.
What side dishes pair well with this loaf?
French fries, potato wedges, coleslaw, Caesar salad, pickle spears, roasted vegetables, or a bowl of tomato soup all make excellent accompaniments.
Can I make it spicy?
Yes. Add sliced jalapeños, crushed red pepper flakes, or a dash of hot sauce to the beef mixture.
Can I use a different type of bread?
Yes. French bread, ciabatta, or a large baguette all work well as long as the loaf is sturdy enough to hold the filling.
